⚙️ Fin Drive: Setup & Maintenance
The Impulse 105 comes equipped with our fin-drive system—perfect for tight marsh channels and shallow-water maneuvering where you need precision and quiet pedal control.
🛠️ Assembly Tips
- Install the pedal arms; left and right pedals are side-specific (reverse threads).
- Use hand tools only—power tools can over-torque hardware.
- Confirm the drive locks securely into the drive bracket before use.
- Don’t lose the extra fins!
🧼 Operation & Care
- In shallow water, flip or retract the fins before launching or beaching.
- Before each trip, check that pedal motion is smooth, chains are properly tensioned, and fin alignment is correct.
- After saltwater use, rinse thoroughly with fresh water.
- Store the drive indoors or out of direct sunlight to protect seals.
- A light lubricant (like Sailkote) keeps chains quiet and smooth.

📝 Registration & Documents (If Using a Motor)
- If you plan to add a motor using the Impulse Stern Mount, note that many states require registration.
- Your Manufacturer Statement of Origin (MSO) is located in the front hatch.
- Can’t find it? Email customerservice@hoodoosports.com with your Hull Identification Number (HIN) (starts with HDK) for a replacement.
⚠️ Safety & Operating Notes
- Always wear your PFD and secure your paddle and loose gear before launching.
- Make sure your drain plugs are installed before launching.
- Lift or use a cart—do not drag the kayak.
- Lift the rudder and retract fins in shallow or obstructed areas.
- Keep hands and feet clear of the drive scupper during install/removal.
- Check all clips, bungees, and pins before launch.
- Distribute heavier items (batteries, coolers) low and centered for better balance.
🚗 Transporting Your Kayak
- Team lift from carry handles or approved points. Avoid lifting when heavy gear (like batteries or motors) is onboard.
- Solo loading: rest the bow on a padded surface, then slide up from the stern.
- If transporting in a truck bed, ensure at least 70% of the hull is supported.
- Example: a short bed (5–5.5’) plus tailgate (2–2.5’) provides ~7–8’ of support. For 10.5-foot kayaks, most short-bed trucks provide adequate support with the tailgate down, but a truck bed extender adds extra stability for long drives.
- Center on crossbars or trailer bunks; use two cam straps over the hull—snug, not crushing.
- Avoid ratchet straps—they can overtighten and warp the hull.
- Add bow/stern lines for highway speeds.
- Remove the seat, pedal drive, batteries, and loose accessories before transport.
- Never strap over gear tracks or accessory mounts.
- When trailering, make sure bunks or rollers align with the hull channels for even support.
🏠 Storing Your Kayak
- When storing, make sure the kayak rests on supports placed about a third of the way in from each end. This keeps the hull from bending or sagging over time.
- Keep retention straps loose—just enough to stabilize.
- Store out of direct sun; cover or keep indoors when possible.
- Rinse the hull, hardware, and rudder system with fresh water after use (mild soap only).
- Apply a light UV protectant (ex: 303 Marine Protectant) periodically to preserve the finish.
