⚙️ Propeller Drive: Setup & Maintenance

The Blackfin 120P is equipped with our propeller-style pedal drive, engineered for efficient cruising and precise maneuvering. Follow these quick steps to set up and get rolling.

🛠️ Assembly Steps

Your Hoodoo Pedal Drive includes three main parts — the drive unit, left and right pedals, and the locking bar.

  1. Install the Locking Bar: Slide the bar through the clamping ring on the front of the drive. Make sure it extends evenly from both sides, then tighten the clamp with the provided Allen key.
No Loctite needed — snug and secure is perfect.
  2. Install the Pedals: Pedals are side-specific (look for “L” or “R”). Align the pedal arm, press firmly into place, and reinstall the bolts. Remember, the left pedal uses a reverse (left-hand) thread.
Optional: a small amount of removable Loctite.
  3. Final Check: Confirm the drive locks securely into the hull and spins smoothly before heading out.

🧼 Operation & Care

  • Never launch or land with the drive deployed; lift and secure it in shallow water.
  • Before each trip, check that the pedals rotate freely and the drive locks firmly in place.
  • After saltwater use, rinse thoroughly with fresh water and air-dry.
  • Store the drive indoors or shaded to protect seals and internal components.
  • For detailed tips, see our Pedal Drive Assembly & Maintenance Guide.

📝 Registration & Documents (If Using a Motor)

  • If you plan to add a motor using the Impulse Stern Mount, note that many states require registration.
  • Your Manufacturer Statement of Origin (MSO) is located in the front hatch.
  • Can’t find it? Email customerservice@hoodoosports.com with your Hull Identification Number (HIN) (starts with HDK) for a replacement.

⚠️ Safety & Operating Notes

  • Always wear your PFD and secure your paddle and gear before launching.
  • Ensure all drain plugs are installed before entering the water.
  • Lift or use a cart — do not drag the hull.
  • Raise the drive and rudder in shallow or obstructed areas.
  • Keep hands and feet clear of the drive scupper during install/removal.
  • Check all clips, bungees, and pins before launch.
  • Distribute heavy gear low and centered for better balance.

🚗 Transporting Your Kayak

  • Team lift from the carry handles; avoid lifting by the seat, drive, or rudder.
  • Solo loading: rest the bow on a padded surface, then slide up from the stern.
  • Center the kayak on your roof rack or trailer crossbars.
  • Use two cam straps over the hull — snug, not crushing.
  • Add bow/stern lines for highway travel.
  • Always remove the seat, pedal drive, and loose accessories before transport.
  • Never strap over gear tracks or accessory mounts.

🏠 Storing Your Kayak

  • When storing, place supports about one-third of the way in from each end to prevent hull sagging.
  • Keep straps loose — just enough to stabilize.
  • Store out of direct sunlight or use a cover when outdoors.
  • Rinse the hull, rudder, and drive with fresh water after each trip (mild soap only).
  • Apply a light UV protectant (e.g., 303 Marine Protectant) periodically to preserve the finish.
