Pedal Drives Vs. Fin Drives which is the best?
Cory Byrnes
When your on the water, your kayak drive isn’t just about getting you from one spot to the next. It determines how far you can go, how quietly you can approach and if your going to be fatigued when you get there. That is why the decision between prop and fin drive is more than just a preference. It’s about matching the tool to the job you plan to do. It’s about matching your equipment to your style of fishing.
Hoodoo Sports offers two types of drives; a prop drive and a fin drive. Both the prop and fin drives can take you on any of your adventures. Is one better than the other though? While both will do most anything you ask it to, there is that 10% of the time the other drive does it just a bit better. If you spend 90% of your time doing the 10% then you want to have made the right choice. The best choice is going to depend on where you spend most of your time fishing. Here we will go over the pros and cons of each drive so you can make the best choice for your next kayak.
A Look at the Hoodoo Sport Prop Drive
Pros |
Cons |
Faster Top Speed |
Drafts more water |
Instant Reverse |
Can get caught in vegetation |
Ideal for open water and long travel |
Requires more maintenance. |
Hoodoo Sports prop drive has places for accessories. |
|
Better position control |
|
Hoodoo Sports Prop drives offer instant reverse, better power, and higher speeds in open water. Prop drives have better acceleration and top speeds compared to fin drives. They are extremely durable and excel when used in deep water were draft is not an issue. All of this makes them ideal for covering lots of open water quickly. The Hoodoo Sports prop drive has the added bonus of accessory attachment points on top of the drive and on the skeg.
Hoodoo Sports Prop drives performance suffers slightly in shallow water. This is not to say you cannot take your prop drive into shallow water but you do need to me more aware of the water depth since the prop is at a fixed depth. You can run into issues especially if you are going through heavy vegetation in water. Sometimes it can be difficult to bring the drive up while on the water. While they are great for long distances they are not as efficient.
If your chasing big fish on big water in windy conditions or if your doing a lot of technical fishing around docs and structure where positioning is important. Then the Prop drive kayak gives you the speed and control you need to be successful on the water. Having the ability to instantaneously go in reverse to pull a big fish out structure like bridge piling can make the difference between having a great fish story or a tall tale.
A Look at the Hoodoo Sports Fin Drive
Pros |
Cons |
Shallower draft |
Cannot go in reverse |
Less maintenance |
Slower top end speeds |
Quieter than prop drives |
Fins can wear at the mast attachment points. |
More efficient propulsion |
|
Better in weeds |
|
Fin drives are extremely efficient and require less effort for propulsion. They perform better than prop drives in shallow water and heavy vegetation. Debris like grasses, line, etc. just fall off. If you do run shallower, you can store the fins up against the hull and flutter the drive to squeak on by. Fin drives are typically quieter than prop drives, helping you sneak up on those spooky redfish.
Hoodoo Sports fin drives do not have reverse. It can be more challenging maintaining position when fishing structure. Depending on the hull design, they may not accelerate or go as fast as a prop driven kayak. This is offset by they fact that they are more efficient than prop drives over all.
If your weekends are spent stalking tailing redfish in ankle-deep marsh water or if you’re traversing the watery version of a jungle the fin drive helps you slide in quietly without getting hung up on vegetation and without you spooking your fish.
A Side by Side
Trait |
Prop Drive |
Fin Drive |
Speed |
Depending on hull design the prop drive will accelerate and have a higher top speed. |
Fin drives make up for their slower speeds with their efficiency. |
Control |
The instant reverse capabilities of the prop drive makes it a precision fishing machine. Anglers who do a lot of technical fishing will prefer the control they have with a prop drive. |
Fin drives have a lesser degree of control. Hoodoo Fin drives do not have a reverse option. Anglers will have to utilize wind and current as well as their drive in order to maintain position. |
Efficiency |
The pedals require a full rotation in order to propel the kayak. Anglers will expend more energy than their fin drive counter parts in getting from one spot to the next. |
Fin drives do not require as much work from the angler to begin propelling the kayak. Because they require less movement anglers can “flutter” the pedals keeping the fins close to the hull of the kayak and traverse extremely shallow water without damaging the fins. |
Shallow Water or Deep Water |
Prop drive performs better in deep water where you might troll or deep drop at. |
The fin drive is more versatile in that it performs well in both. It does perform better in shallow water but there are not any major disadvantages to using it in deep water. |
Noise |
A prop drive creates more noise. It is just in the nature of props moving through water and creating cavitation as they spin. |
Nearly silent anglers are able to use this. |
Reverse |
Instant reverse which means less of a learning curve in how to control your kayak. |
Does not have a reverse option. Anglers have to utilize the wind and current to help their positioning. |
Durability |
Arguably prop drives are more durable. They do have less moving parts than a fin drive. However they require more consistent maintenance over time. Especially if used in salty or sandy conditions. |
While efficient, fins can wear at the mast attachment points and may need more attention over years of heavy use. |
Best application |
Deep open water or very technical fishing situations where control is paramount. Excellent for fishing docks, structures or trolling long distances. |
Shallow water or densely vegetated water where anglers stalk their fish. Excellent for closing the distance in sight fishing. |
Conclusion
Overall both the Hoodoo Sports drives are versatile and will get you on the water quickly. Both are effective in deep water and shallow water and both have some advantages and disadvantages in those different fishing environments. The right drive will feel like a natural extension of your fishing style. Whether you need the raw power and control of a prop drive or the stealth and efficiency of a fin drive, Hoodoo Sports has you covered. Still unsure?
