Get to Know Your Hero 130 Apex

A compact, ultra-capable 13’ microskiff built for range, stability, and load-carrying capacity. The Hero 130 Apex blends kayak-level access with skiff-like deck space—ideal for electric or small gas power, sight fishing, and skinny-water missions.

📦 What’s Included

  • Fin Pedal Drive
  • Fin Drive Plug
  • 360° Swivel Seat
  • Aluminum Paddle
  • Deck Matting
  • Bottom-Side Rudder
  • Flush-Mounted Rod Holders
  • Accessory Track Rails
  • Cast Aluminum Transom (mounting hardware included)

🧰 Some Assembly Required

  • Install the transom. Use stainless steel bolts, washers, and nuts for corrosion resistance (included). Install bolts with the threads facing down to prevent line or gear snags. Torque to 18 ft-lb (24.4 N·m)—anything tighter can damage the hull and void your warranty.
  • Install side rails
  • Install back rail (do not use as a lift point)
  • Install swivel seat armrests (optional for more elbow room)
⚠️ Important: Do not lift the kayak using the back rail—especially with a motor installed. Lifting by the back rail may cause damage and void your warranty.

🧩 Recommended Accessories

  • Up to a 6 HP motor (gas or electric)
  • YakPower® Kits (power for lights, fish finder, USB, switches)
  • Tiller Handle Extension

⚙️ Fin Drive: Setup & Maintenance

The Hero 130 Apex comes equipped with our fin drive system—so you can motor to your spot, drop in the fins, and sneak into your favorite fishing hole. The fish won’t know what hit them!

🛠️ Assembly Tips

  • Install the pedal arms. Left and right pedals are side-specific (reverse threads).
  • Use hand tools—power tools can over-torque hardware.
  • Confirm the drive locks securely into the drive bracket before use.
  • Don’t lose the extra fins!

🧼 Operation & Care

  • In shallow water, flip/retract the fins before launching or beaching.
  • Before each trip, verify smooth pedal operation, proper chain/pulley tension, and fin tensioner adjustment.
  • After saltwater use, rinse thoroughly with fresh water.
  • Store the drive indoors or out of direct sunlight to extend seal life.
  • A light lubricant on the chains helps reduce noise and keep things smooth (e.g., Sailkote).

📝 Registration & Documents (If Using a Motor)

  • Many states require registration when a motor is installed. Check your local/state regulations for compliance.
  • Your Manufacturer Statement of Origin (MSO) is located in the front hatch.
  • Can’t find it? Email customerservice@hoodoosports.com with your Hull Identification Number (HIN) that begins with “HDK” for a replacement.

⚠️ Safety & Operating Notes

  • Wear your PFD and secure your paddle and loose gear before launching.
  • Always ensure your drain plugs are installed before launching.
  • Lift or use a cart—do not drag the hull.
  • Lift the rudder and retract fins in shallow/obstructed areas.
  • Keep hands/feet clear of the drive scupper during install/removal.
  • Inspect and secure all clips, bungees, pins, and mounts before launch.
  • Distribute heavy items (batteries, coolers) low and centered for stability.

🚗 Transporting Your Microskiff

  • Team lift from carry handles/approved points; avoid lifting by the back rail.
  • Solo loading: rest the bow on a padded surface, then slide up from the stern.
  • If using a truck bed, aim for at least 70% of the hull supported.
Example: a standard short bed (5–5.5’) plus the tailgate (add ~2–2.5’) provides ~7–8’ (70–80%) of support. For longer hulls, consider a truck bed extender.
  • Center on crossbars or trailer bunks; use two cam straps over the hull—snug, not crushing.
  • Avoid ratchet straps; it’s easy to overtighten and damage the hull.
  • Add bow/stern lines for highway speeds.
  • Remove seat modules, pedal drive, batteries, and loose accessories before transport.
  • Never strap over gear tracks or accessory mounts.
  • If trailering, ensure bunks or rollers align with hull channels for even support.

🏠 Storing Your Microskiff

  • When storing, make sure the kayak rests on supports placed about a third of the way in from each end. This keeps the hull from bending or sagging over time.
  • Keep retention straps loose—just enough to stabilize.
  • Store out of direct sun; cover or keep indoors when possible.
  • Rinse hull, hardware, and electronics with fresh water after salt use; mild soap only.
  • Apply a light UV protectant (e.g., 303 Marine Protectant) periodically to help preserve the finish.
