⚙️ Propeller Drive: Setup & Maintenance
The Voyager 100P is equipped with our propeller-style pedal drive, engineered for smooth, efficient pedaling in both forward and reverse. Here’s how to get it set up and ready for the water.
🛠️ Assembly Steps
Your Hoodoo Pedal Drive includes three main parts — the drive unit, left and right pedals, and the locking bar.
-
Install the Locking Bar: Slide the bar through the clamping ring on the front of the drive. Use a ruler or tape measure to ensure it extends evenly from both sides, then tighten the clamp with the provided Allen key.
Tip: No Loctite needed — just snug it securely. -
Install the Pedals: Each pedal is side-specific (look for “L” or “R” stamped on the back). Align the pedal arm with the shaft and press firmly into place. Reinstall the bolts — remember, the left pedal uses a reverse (left-hand) thread.
Optional: Apply a small amount of removable (non-permanent) Loctite. - Final Check: Confirm the drive locks securely into the kayak’s hull and the pedals spin smoothly before use.
🧼 Operation & Care
- Never launch or land with the drive deployed; lift and secure it in shallow water.
- Before each trip, check that the pedals spin smoothly and the drive locks firmly in place.
- After saltwater use, rinse thoroughly with fresh water and let it air-dry.
- Store indoors when possible to protect seals and internal components.
- For detailed maintenance tips, see our Pedal Drive Assembly & Maintenance Guide.
📝 Registration & Documents (If Using a Motor)
- If you plan to add a motor, please be aware that many states require registration.
- One thing you will need to register your kayak is your Manufacturer Statement of Origin (MSO) is located in the front hatch.
- Can’t find it? Email customerservice@hoodoosports.com with your Hull Identification Number (HIN) (starts with HDK) for a replacement.
⚠️ Safety & Operating Notes
- Always wear your PFD and secure your paddle before launching.
- Ensure all drain plugs are installed before entering the water.
- Lift or use a cart — never drag your kayak.
- Remove or raise the drive when beaching or in shallow areas.
- Keep hands and feet clear of the drive scupper during install/removal.
- Inspect and secure all clips, bungees, and pins before launch.
- Distribute heavy gear low and centered for stability.
🚗 Transporting Your Kayak
- Team lift using the carry handles; avoid lifting by the seat, drive pod, or rudder.
- Solo loading: rest the bow on a padded surface, then slide up from the stern.
- Center the kayak on your roof rack or trailer crossbars.
- Use two cam straps across the hull — snug, not over-tightened.
- Add bow/stern lines for highway travel.
- Always remove the seat, paddle, and pedal drive before transport.
- Never strap over gear tracks or accessory mounts.
🏠 Storing Your Kayak
- When storing, rest the kayak on supports about a third of the way in from each end to prevent warping or sagging.
- Keep retention straps loose — just enough to stabilize.
- Store out of direct sunlight; cover or keep indoors when possible.
- Rinse the hull, rudder, and drive components with fresh water after each trip (mild soap only).
- Apply a light UV protectant (e.g., 303 Marine Protectant) periodically to preserve the finish.
